The Inheritance of Greatness: He Literally Cloned a Face, + Called it the Blueprint

On Lineage, Prophecy, + the Beautiful Art of Resting

They say when a woman finds her footing, she begins to look a lot like the women who paved the road before her. Lately, I’ve been looking in the mirror, and the truth is undeniable: if the Blueprint was a divine clone, then I’m the thief who stole the face! I’m looking directly at my (paternal) grandmother—the woman we called ‘Mommy’.

Listen, Mommy was a complete force of nature—regal, elegant, and an incredibly sharp, classy businesswoman. When I look at old black-and-white photos of her, I am struck by her absolute poise. The impeccable, structural geles (traditional head wraps), the intricate textures of her white Nigerian lace, the winged eyeliner (see, genetics lol *wink*), and the jewelry that commanded a room before she ever spoke a word. She possessed a visual harmony and an innate understanding of scale, beauty, and presence.

It is no accident that I became a designer. It is a literal, genetic inheritance.

And long before I ever built Twelve15 Design Studio, long before I survived the grueling marathon of entrepreneurship, Mommy knew exactly who I was.

A Breath, A Prophecy, + A Nervous System Reset

My entry into this world was not gentle. I was born not breathing—a complicated, terrifying birth that required immediate resuscitation, as I have previously shared with my email subscriber family and in this blog post in The Full Edit (which will have a new name coming soon—one that speaks deeply to my brain and being). My nervous system was shocked into survival mode from my very first second fresh out the pack.

But right there at the beginning, in the midst of that medical chaos, Mommy stepped into her spiritual authority. She looked at her newborn granddaughter and spoke a prophecy over me:

“This girl is here to do great things.”

For forty-one years, those words weren’t some heavy expectation I was fighting to live up to—they were simply the truth of how I was wired from day one. I naturally run on adrenaline, processing the world with an intense, vivid clarity. For a highly observant and deeply sensitive mind, the volume isn’t just loud during chaos—it stays turned all the way up even in the quietest, most still moments. I translated those intense visceral responses to color, texture, and geometry into over twenty years of design work—eleven of those spent running my own independent design business… and really throughout my life.

But when you spend your entire life in fight-or-flight, eventually the engine seizes. Navigating a challenging season of family dynamics, burnout from full-service execution, and the heavy administrative labor of running a business can take a profound toll—not just on your body, but on your soul and your spirit. It can make you feel like you’ve temporarily lost your spark.

In those moments of deep depletion, you have to stop and ask: how do I reclaim the space to do those great things on my own terms?

Ink, Textures, + The Geometry of My Compass

If you want to understand how a creative mind processes the world, you can look at my arm. It is a canvas of composition, balance, and contrast—a beautiful, tactile diary of my soul that I have been building over the years.

Over the years, I gave my tattoo artist, Paul, full creative freedom to blend artsy, brutalist geometry with organic, botanical textures. This sleeve is a masterclass in soft meeting hard, organic meeting structured—and it has been a beautiful journey of layers and milestone chapters:

  • The Bedrock (2011): It all started on my inner wrist, tucked quietly behind what would later become the leaves of my Protea. It’s a delicate script acronym, a.i.l.m.l.i.a., meaning: Art Is Life, My Life Imitates Art. Though it sits hidden under the layers of new growth, it remains the absolute foundation of how I process the world.
  • The Compass (The First Modern Piece): I got this creative compass first, on my birthday—built from a writing pen and woven with wild vines, pointing permanently to “N” for North. It is my literal guide, anchored right onto my skin.

  • The Bloom: The striking King Protea (or Queen Protea when I look at it, lol) came next, just two months later, bringing a soft but powerful botanical presence to the composition.
  • The Inner Sleeve (The 41st Birthday): Finally, I added the pieces closest to my elbow—the detailed, tactile layers of the ranunculus, the sharp texture of the eryngium (thistle), and those solid, heavy brutalist geometric frames alongside that single, grounding pop of crimson-rust color. I got these on my 41st birthday last year, and I actually fell asleep for a portion of the session… no lie! Talk about pain tolerance, right? lol 😂

Along the way, as it feels right, I’ll be adding some custom florals and other meaningful elements. The elements on this sleeve, both current and future, represent a deeper story of absolute resilience, strength, power, creativity, peace, and softness.

This sleeve is a reminder that my inner compass is permanent. No matter the noise or the outside storm, my true north is secure.

Living the Prophecy: Redefining “Great Things” for This New Era

I am not waiting to enter a new era. The truth is, I’ve been in it. And it looks and feels so completely different from the life I used to live.

For years, I didn’t even realize how intensely high-functioning I was. I existed in a world where every single day was lived like I already had a backpack of lead strapped to my shoulders—a heavy, invisible weight that I just carried around as my baseline. I was living with chronic headaches every single day, navigating constant physical pain, and heavily masking just to keep the wheels turning. It is only now, in the quiet of slowing down, that I look back and realize how much I was actually carrying. There’s a moment of looking back and thinking, Oh my gosh, I can take that. I did take that. But back then, I was just surviving it, running so fast I couldn’t see the toll it was taking not just on my body, but on my soul and my spirit.

Operating at that highly intelligent, highly capable level was never about trying to prove myself to anyone—that was simply who I was, how I naturally existed, and how I executed. But I am no longer burning myself to the ground for business, or performing for the demands of a saturated, digital-first industry. I have absolutely nothing to prove to anyone.

Instead, this era is quiet. It looks like setting airtight boundaries and making whatever drains me completely irrelevant to my peace. It feels like the physical, radical act of resting—letting my jaw finally unclench, letting my body, soul, and spirit heal, and sleeping without a shred of guilt. It looks like shifting away from the chaos of full-service execution and moving toward the parts of design that actually feed my soul: the deep-dive research, the beautiful, innate gift of writing, the quench for teaching (and learning), and my pure, spatial intuition.

Mommy was gone far too soon, but she left her blueprint behind.

If she were standing here with me now, I know she would be holding up a mirror, smiling at the reflection because she’d know that’s exactly where I got it from. She’d want me to see my own strength the way she saw it. And I believe with all my heart that Mommy wouldn’t just be proud of my resilience. She would be proud of my deep love for and dependence on our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She would celebrate my witty, sharp intellect, my unique superpowers, and even my quirks with numbers. She would be proud of me taking a break, resting, pivoting, and learning to be kind to myself.

But ultimately, she would be proud of well—Me. Period.

In this season, I don’t have to panic. I just have to press into God, lean into my lineage, and let the old, exhausting ways of existing and working fall away.

I was resuscitated at birth for a reason. I am still here. The lights are low, the security heating pad LOL is on, the boundaries are locked, and the era of Ofunneka is already here.

With love and light,

Ofunneka
