Collier Cottage Project- Part I: Kitchen & Primary Bedroom

Hello, friends! Let me start by saying that I love it when clients trust me with their homes… REPEATEDLY! So, first just some background and why this project was a labor of LOVE. My client relocated from Trotwood, Ohio to Columbus, Ohio in the Summer of 2021. I wish it were for better circumstances, but unfortunately her husband fell ill, and the Columbus area hospitals and care facilities were better equipped for his care; not to mention her son lived there as well. This move was a big transition for her, as she had not lived in a different city prior, and her home life looked different unfortunately with the loss of a spouse. In late 2018 she contacted me to have work done on what she thought would be her forever home. I completely transformed her Kitchen, Dining Room and Home Office and other spaces throughout her home. You can see those transformations on my Instagram (Kitchen: here, here, here), (Dining Room: here, and here), and (Home Office: here). That project was completed in 2019 right in time for her to host Thanksgiving in her newly renovated custom home.

Now that we have a little background, let’s fast forward a bit to 2021. When she reached out to me about renovating her new home in Columbus, I was immediately excited and equally honored. I made the trip out to look around and see what we were getting ourselves into (MAGIC, ok!? Magic and great design was what we were getting ourselves into LOL). Since Part I of this 3-part reveal is of the Kitchen and the Primary Bedroom, I am only going to share what those two specific spaces looked like prior to my services being rendered, during the project, and of course, the AFTER! I will have separate blog posts for the other spaces. Also, there are Client Reveal/Reaction videos for both spaces. With that being said, here is what the Kitchen looked like before:

Kitchen- Before

As you can see the kitchen had good bones… the layout was not bad, the cabinets were in great condition, but everything else… well it speaks for itself. Below is a video that also captures the space before, shortly after she officially moved into the home.

Let’s get to work… here is the Mood Board from the overall Concept that my client selected:

Kitchen- Mood Board

Let me just tell you this… when my client leaned in this direction for her kitchen, I knew it was going to be beyond fabulous! Let’s take a look at some of the videos of the DURING/DEMO of the Kitchen.

Kitchen- Demo / During

During this phase of the project, I captured video of this process and figured that would be the best way to share this process. So, take a look!

**WARNING, after the yellow intro, the video starts off a little loud with hammering, but it doesn’t last long**

Kitchen- The Details

As you can see the details really matter, which you’ll really get to see in the after photos. From the outlets and outlet covers having a cohesive look, to the upgraded door hardware, to painting the kitchen island, panty block and all the door and frames Caviar by Sherwin-Williams. Again, since the cabinets were beautiful and in great condition, I just changed the “earrings” AKA the hardware to better fit the style of the kitchen. The countertops are a Class G quartz with a matte finish and beautiful veining. The sink is 60/40 undermount double basin sink. I selected a 60/40 farmhouse sink in her previous home’s kitchen, so she was comfortable with this style. The backsplash is an art deco ceramic tile whose design oozes wow-factor and alternates from textured areas to polished ones. Once the heavy lifting was done it was time to style the kitchen and reveal it to my client. Let’s take a look at the AFTER photos below.

Primary Bedroom

When you see the primary bedroom (and the bathroom) in it’s before state, not much can be said but “EVERYTHING’S GOTTA GOOOOO!!!” My client wanted and needed a bedroom that was not only a mini sanctuary, but exuded culture without it being overdone. Take a look at the Pepto-Pink bedroom before below.

Again, when my client selected this mood board and concept, I was ready to turn the space out!!

Primary Bedroom- The Details

Due to the sensitivity of what my client had experienced with her spouse, I didn’t capture many DURING photos and videos as this was her safe space. We utilized most of her existing furniture from her previous home for this space. The carpet was updated to the same flooring throughout the home, and the walls were painted the same color that was in the Living Room and other areas throughout the home. Let me tell you guys about this magical quilt. There was a quilt that she owned honoring the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated, and when I laid eyes on it, I just KNEW it had to be featured in her bedroom, NOT on the bed though! The details and vibrancy of the colors were stunning. The quilt entitled “Joy Power Service” was created by Kim Alexis Newton, you can find her on Instagram here and see the up-close details and description of the art quilt on her website here. It is truly STUNNING!

The accent wall was painted Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams and we updated window treatments and of course that old ceiling fan had to be replaced with something that incorporated some brass! Let’s take a look at the AFTER photos of the space below.
