Kitchen Style Series Love That Cabinet Color!

I will be running a series entitled "Kitchen Style Series" where I will feature blogs that center around one of the most beloved rooms in a house, the KITCHEN!  Some blogs include "Big + Small Kitchen Upgrades," "Countertop Style Mashups," etc.  So stay tuned for those.  I wanted to begin the series chomping it up a bit about kitchen cabinet colors, + run through some of my favorite color options for them, including a couple that are unexpected

Painting your kitchen cabinets is like mouth-to-mouth resuscitation! Ooooor was that a little too much?  What I'm getting at is that the perfect cabinet color can bring life to your kitchen.  You don't always have to go with the expected colors either. That's one of the cool things about paint, you can always redo! Although painting cabinetry is a big job, you'll find that it was well worth it in the end.

So, if you'll allow me to keep it real for a sec, replacing cabinetry can be expen$$$ive, so it's nice to know that you have options to spruce things up, like painting.  Before you make any decisions to paint (especially if you are going to DIY), be sure to figure out what the existing finish is on your cabinets.  If you're not too sure, + you've YouTube'd the heck out of it (I joooke, I kiiiiid!), pop a door or a drawer off + take it to your local paint supplier, they should be able to assist you with getting your cabinets ready for painting.  I'm not going to run through the play-by-play on how to paint your cabinets from prep, to priming, to drying, I just want to touch specifically on color for today's series.

If a professional is not handling your paint job (read: if you, your uncle, your second cousin, etc. is doing the work) be sure to shop for your paint at a reputable paint supply store where you can have assistance choosing the right products.  I absolutely love, love, love, Sherwin-Williams, so maybe start there?  Great!  Alright folks, so it's not just about picking pretty colors, trust me you will pick the best colors + your cabinets will look the bomb.com, + you will be super thrilled + stuff when you're done.  Buuuut, you want to be sure that you are selecting paint that can stand up to repeated washing, wear + tear, + that you're selecting paint that is non-blocking so that it won't stick to itself when the cabinet doors are closed, cuz that's not cute, right?  Also, keep in mind that dark colors will oftentimes reveal imperfections in the paint + cabinetry much more than light colors would, + guess what...? *whispers* they tend to highlight dirt, too.  But no worries, that definitely doesn't mean you should 86 the idea of a darker color for your cabinets, + just so that you believe me, I'll show you some rockin' dark options that I love, too.

Without further ado, here are some of my fave paint colors for kitchen cabinets. I've grouped them into color families below.

So, gray is my favorite color! Are you shocked??? Painting your kitchen cabinets gray can easily transform them.  There is a sense of elegance to the color gray + it often has a tendency to play off of other colors in the room quite well.  This is one of the more "safer" color options, but still provides for a nice aesthetic in the kitchen.  The nice thing about these shades of gray is that you can, like other colors, paint your upper cabinets a lighter shade + your lower cabinets a darker shade. Depending on the size of your kitchen, doing this will break the space up nicely.

I have a thing for blue in the kitchen! It's sexy in a dark shade + even sexier if paired with nice finishes + fixtures. The versatility of the color is endless!  I like to see the color with a darker wood floor + light countertops, maybe a granite with a unique grain detail.

A nice yellow makes a space, but yellows can be an eye-assaulting color if used inappropriately. Yupp, I went there!  In a kitchen yellows can be paired with a nice neutral ceramic tile backsplash + maybe a natural oak island for a softer, more natural look, + paired with an appliance in a bolder color like the black range + hood pictured above.

Quite the risk taker you are!! Actually, my parent's kitchen cabinets are green, although they're in need of some updating (sorry momma!), their cabinet color is close to Liberty Park by Benjamin Moore. Green in the kitchen is always a pleasant surprise. Maybe you only want a pop of green in your kitchen, then consider only painting the island, like pictured above, or only painting  the lower cabinets in your favorite hue.

For an unexpected dash of personality, some other cabinet color options fall on the darker, more unique side. The two unexpected colors I chose are black + orange.  There is a lot to take into consideration when opting for a more unexpected kitchen cabinet color including lighting elements + colors of other rooms nearby, especially in open-concept layouts so choose wisely. Also with these unexpected colors be sure to choose a paint finish that will complement your selection quite nicely.

Do any of these paint colors resonate with you? What are some of your favorite kitchen cabinet colors that aren't listed? I'd love to hear from you!
